Six PSJA ISD Athletes Sign to Play at Collegiate Level

PHARR – Congratulations to six Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA ISD) athletes for signing to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. The district held signings to celebrate them on Friday, May 21 and Tuesday, May 25, 2021.

The student athletes were:

Micah Lopez, PSJA North ECHS

PSJA North Early College High School Senior Linebacker Micah Lopez signed to play football for the Washington State Cougars. Lopez is the first Raider to commit to play football for a division 1 program. 

The senior earned spots on The Monitor’s All-Area Second Team and the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 6A Honorable Mention All-State Team for his work on the field as a senior.

Javier Pichardo, PSJA ECHS

He has committed to the Midland University Powerlifting Program in Nebraska. Javier has been training for years and this year he was crowned the UIL State Powerlifting Champion in the 165 lb. weight division. He also holds the All-Time State Squat Record in the 165 lb. weight division. As an Archetype Sponsored Athlete, he is a 3-time All State Finalist and holds the 5A Regional Squat Record in the 165 lbs. weight division. Javier looks forward attending Midland University to continue his powerlifting career, while getting a great education and making his hometown proud!

Anthony Santoscoy, PSJA ECHS

Anthony is a 2-year letterman and A & B Honor Roll Student. Anthony wants to thank all his football coaches and teachers that helped him become a better student athlete all 4-years at PSJA ECHS. Anthony plans to attend Buena Vista University in the fall on an athletic scholarship to play football and pursue his degree in Exercise Science. Anthony’s goal is to pursue a career in coaching to give back to his community and help young athletes play at the next level.

Juan Rodriguez, PSJA ECHS

Juan has been playing basketball with the San Juan Parks and Recreation since he was in 3rd grade, he played with Team Hustle, a traveling team for 6 years, and then worked hard on his way up as he played with the Austin MS Bruins, the Freshman Dark team and then eventually the Varsity Bears Basketball Team. His hard work paid off as he received the Offensive MVP as a freshman, Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore, and in his senior year was named Second Team All-District. Juan was also invited to play in the All-Star Games. Juan will be studying Kinesiology and looks forward to playing basketball at the college level. We know he will continue to make our community proud.

Joseph Garza, PSJA ECHS

Joseph Garza, is a 2021 THSPA State Qualifying Powerlifter and a two-time USAPL Champion in his division. He plans to attend Midland University in Nebraska and major in Exercise Science. He is excited to continue his lifting career at the collegiate level as he plans to pursue the USAPL Collegiate National Championship by 2023 and ultimately give back to future athletes as a High School Powerlifting Coach. 

Diego Villescas, PSJA ECHS

Diego Villescas is also signing to play baseball with the UTRGV Vaqueros. He is a 4-year member of the PSJA Bears Varsity Baseball Team where he received Varsity Player of the Yera for 2019, and 2nd Team All-District for the same year as a 3rd Baseman. This year, he received 1st Team All-District Shortstop Honors. He plans to major in Criminal Justice and wishes to pursue a career in Law Enforcement.
