EDINBURG – The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District on Friday celebrated School Lunch Hero Day by honoring its school nutrition employees.

“We thank the staff from our Child Nutrition Department for preparing healthy meals, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies and offering service with a smile,” said ECISD School Board President Oscar Salinas. “We truly recognize their professionalism and commitment to making sure no child goes hungry in our school community.”

According to the School Nutrition Association (SNA), School Lunch Hero Day was designated by SNA and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series.  School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million students each school day nationwide.

“Edinburg CISD congratulates our Child Nutrition Department staff for their hard work and dedication for providing thousands of health meals to our children,” said ECISD Interim Superintendent Gilbert Garza Jr. “From their friendly greetings in the cafeteria and the love they dish out with every student’s meal, to how they encourage kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, our school nutrition professionals are truly heroes.”

The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented, according to SNA. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day.

“I think it’s important that we celebrate School Lunch Hero Day, because now more than ever we realize the importance of the hard work our child nutrition staff members provide for our children,” said ECISD Child Nutrition Director Jaime Perez. “It’s especially important right now with our Curbside Meal Pickup Program, where our staff is ensuring that our children don’t go to bed hungry.”

Since March 23, the Child Nutrition Department has served approximately 800,00 healthy meals to children as part of the Curbside Meal Pickup Program. The program runs Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 31 campuses. For more information, call the Edinburg CISD Child Nutrition Department at (956) 289-2300.
