Edinburg, Texas – The Texas Education Agency recently announced that the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District was awarded a $150,000 Technology Lending grant to purchase laptops and internet access devices for students to use off campus.

“The Technology Lending grant will allow us to loan Chromebooks and internet hotspots to approximately 200 of our fifth-grade students, who live in rural areas and are not able to afford these services,” ECISD Superintendent Dr. René Gutiérrez said. “One of the goals of this project is to inspire creativity and enhance student learning experiences by providing new opportunities linked to 21st-century technology.”

Three Edinburg CISD campuses will participate in the project, which includes Avila Elementary School, Brewster School, and Hargill Elementary School.

According to TEA, 148 school districts and charters have been awarded 2018–2019 Technology Lending grants, aimed at ensuring equitable access to quality digital resources and courses for all students.

Technology Lending grants provide school systems funds to purchase technology devices that are loaned to students for access to digital instruction materials off campus. The grant also provides personal student learning devices and internet access for students who would not otherwise have access to digital instructional materials off campus.
