MISSION, Texas- Sharyland ISD proudly announces the appointment of Coach Laura Cavazos as Assistant Athletic Director, marking a historic milestone as the first female to hold the position in district history. With a decorated career in education and athletics, Cavazos brings extensive experience, a proven record of leadership, and a passion for student success both on and off the court.
Coach Cavazos has been a cornerstone of Sharyland ISD’s athletic program, serving as Head Volleyball Coach and Assistant Athletic Coordinator at Pioneer High School since 2014. She is a three-time District Coach of the Year (2021, 2013, 2012) and has led her teams to numerous playoff appearances and championships. Under her leadership, Pioneer High School’s volleyball team secured the 2021 District Championship, solidifying her reputation as a formidable coach.
With a coaching career that includes over 300 career victories and guiding eight athletes to compete at the collegiate level, Cavazos is widely respected for her ability to foster athletic talent and leadership in her players. Her journey as an athlete, having played NCAA Division | Volleyball and earning a Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship, reflects the deep dedication she brings to Sharyland ISD’s athletic programs.
Cavazos holds a Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in English with a minor in Communications, pairing her academic achievements with her on-the-court expertise. She has served in several roles across Sharyland and beyond, including Assistant Coach at the University of Texas-Pan American, and Athletic Coordinator at Donna High School. Her appointment marks a new chapter of growth and empowerment for Sharyland ISD athletics.
“I am honored and excited to serve as Assistant Athletic Director and to continue contributing to a district that has given me so much throughout my career. I look forward to fostering even more opportunities for our student-athletes and upholding Sharyland’s Tradition of Excellence,” said Cavazos.
