LAREDO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s golf team finished in third place at the Border Olympics on Monday at Laredo Country Club with a three-round score of 853, which is the second lowest three-round team score in program history.
UTRGV posted a final round 297 as it finished just three shots behind Sam Houston State for second place. Arkansas State won the team title with a three-round score of 835 after a final round 290. UTRGV improved from last year’s Border Olympics three-round score of 856.
Senior Alvaro Hernandez finished tied for fourth with a three-round score of 208 after a final round 74. The three-round 208 is the sixth best three-round score in program history. He finished just four strokes behind Arkansas State’s Zan Luka Stirn who won the individual title with a three-round 204.
Junior Henry Fisher carded a final round 76 to finish tied for 19thwith a three-round score of 215. Redshirt sophomore Alex Summersposted the team’s best round of the day with a final round one-under par 71 as he finished tied with Fisher at 19thwith a three-round score of 215.
Senior Pedro Lamadrid turned in a final round 75 to finish tied for 31stwith a three-round score of 218. Junior Tae Itthiratchaiturned in a final round 84 to finish tied for 70thwith a three-round score of 226 and junior Luca Portellifinished tied for 77thwith a three-round score of 229 after a final round 77.
UTRGV will have a quick turnaround as it heads to the Grand Canyon Invitational from March 15-16.
