AUSTIN – TEXPAC, the political advocacy arm of the Texas Medical Association (TMA), has announced its endorsement of Harvey Hilderbran for Texas comptroller in the Republican primary.

“We’re pleased to put our support behind Harvey Hilderbran. He understands physicians are small- and mid-size-business people buried in red tape and regulations today. We know we can count on Harvey to maintain a healthy Texas business climate that benefits physicians’ practices and their patients,” said TEXPAC Board Chair Jerry Hunsaker, MD.

“Harvey has the experience and expertise needed to do this job and to do it well,” added Dr. Hunsaker. “As chair of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee for the past four years, he has touched every bill related to Texas’ taxes. He worked hard to reduce wasteful spending and to make Texas’ tax system fairer for taxpayers.

“Texas physicians know Harvey will protect the current exemptions that prevent the taxation of medical care services” Dr. Hunsaker explained. “Harvey knows people don’t choose to get sick — so taxing them for illness is not the answer. We know we can count on Harvey Hilderbran as Texas comptroller because he has worked on public health and human service issues for the past two decades.”

Comptroller candidate Harvey Hilderbran said, “I am honored to receive the endorsement of TEXPAC, the political arm of TMA in the Republican primary for Texas comptroller. With more than 47,000 members, TMA is one of the most effective and important advocacy groups in our state. I stood shoulder to shoulder with TMA in the 1990s fighting for tort reform, ultimately passing it in 2003 and strengthening it since then.  We must continue to aggressively fight the efforts of plaintiffs’ attorneys to infiltrate Republican primaries in their unending quest to weaken tort reform in Texas. I am proud to have successfully worked with TMA and doctors from around the state to improve the health of all Texans by collaboratively working on tax issues and preserving the doctor-patient relationship. I deeply appreciate their vote of confidence in me and look forward to working with them as Texas comptroller to fight for all Texas taxpayers.”

TEXPAC speaks on behalf of more than 47,000 Texas physicians and medical students, and nearly 5,000 alliance members. Organized in 1962, TEXPAC is one of the oldest political action committees in Texas. TEXPAC also is one of the largest bipartisan PACs in the state and ranks first in size among other state medical association PACs.
