Department of Transportation Grant Funds Will Help Upgrade Bus System, Build Pedestrian/Bike Bridge Between South Padre Island and Port Isabel

AUSTIN – U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) issued the following statement congratulating the City of Brownsville on receiving a $10 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve the city’s bus and bicycle and pedestrian systems:

“I want to congratulate Brownsville’s city leaders for their hard work and commitment to these important infrastructure projects, which now are one big step closer to reality,” Senator Cornyn said. “The bus system upgrades and the pedestrian bridge between South Padre Island and Port Isabel will have far reaching impacts on not only Brownsville, but the entire coastal region.”

Senator Cornyn wrote a letter to the Department of Transportation in support of Brownsville’s grant application in April.

Background on the TIGER Grant Program

The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant program within the U.S. Department of Transportation allows communities to apply for grant funding to help finance infrastructure improvement projects that generate economic development and improve access to reliable, safe and affordable transportation options.
