WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) issued a statement in response to the recent local public health emergency declaration due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) by San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg:

“This afternoon San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg declared a local public health emergency following the release of a patient from quarantine who later tested positive for COVID-19.

I am disturbed by the handling of this situation by health management officials, but maintain confidence in the medical and professional staff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and at the hospitals in Texas. I am in touch with federal, state and local health officials regarding this outbreak and will keep the 15th District of Texas updated as this develops.

It’s vitally important that local, state and federal agencies have the resources they need to effectively combat COVID-19. While the Administration’s response has largely been insufficient, Congress is preparing a robust package that will meet the scale of this crisis in preparation for any situation that may arise from this virus.

It is also important that everyone follow the recommendations from the CDC. For more information and updates on the coronavirus, please visit the CDC website at www.CDC.gov.”
