EDINBURG, Texas — Cano and Sons Trucking is continuing to expand its cross-border transportation operations while seeking additional drivers, Safety Director Juan Silva said during the third annual Pharr Truck Expo.
Silva represented the company at the event and discussed its operations, workforce, and participation in the gathering of trucking and trade representatives.
Cano and Sons Trucking specializes in transportation and logistics between the United States and Mexico, moving dry and refrigerated freight in both directions across the border.
“We transport freight from door to door from Mexico into the United States and vice versa, from here to Mexico too,” Silva said. “Dry freight and refrigerated freight.”
He said the cargo includes freight tied to Mexico’s maquiladora industry, as well as produce moving between the United States and Mexico.
Silva has experienced the company’s growth firsthand. He said he worked as a driver for more than 10 years before moving into the safety department six years ago. He eventually became safety director, with responsibilities that include hiring, safety, and U.S. Department of Transportation compliance.
“It’s a great company to work for,” Silva said.
According to the company, Juan and Sara Cano founded Cano and Sons Trucking in the Rio Grande Valley in 1999 with one truck. The company now reports a fleet of more than 190 trucks and 700 trailers and a workforce of more than 200 employees.
Silva said he has known Juan Cano since the company was considerably smaller.
“The company owners are wonderful people to work for,” Silva said. “I’ve known Juan Cano since he had just 12 trucks. He and his wife have built the company together.”
The company’s main yard is in San Juan, Texas. Silva said it also has operations in Mexico and Laredo, Texas, and is considering opening a Dallas location in the future.
Participating in the Pharr Truck Expo gives Cano and Sons Trucking an opportunity to connect with other companies and people involved in the transportation industry, Silva said.
“We get to know other companies, make friends and get some ideas,” he said.
The company provides transportation and logistics services supporting commerce between the United States and Mexico. Its operations include dry and refrigerated freight, serving businesses that depend on moving products across the border.
Silva said Cano and Sons Trucking is currently recruiting drivers and invited prospective employees to visit the company and learn about employment opportunities.
“We’re hiring drivers, good drivers,” Silva said. “You are more than welcome to come and visit with us, and we will have a talk about your future.”
