William Paul Webber III is a Boy Scout with Troop 7 and he is working on his Eagle Scout Project which is coordinating an official American Flag Retirement Ceremony on Flag Day 2018. The ceremony will be in accordance with the US Flag code that states, “the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

The project began with assisting Bentsen State Park, to properly and formally retire their American flags.  It now includes the Texas Department of Transportation, the City of Pharr Police Department, at least one McAllen ISD school and community residents’ flags. He has worked with a Colonel Plummer.

William just completed 8th grade at McAllen ISD’s Cathey Middle School and will be a 9th Grader this fall at McAllen Memorial High School.

In addition, he also promoted Patriotism to the community by providing a “Free American Flag Exchange.”  He took in and gave away 50 US Flags to community members at the McAllen Farmers Market on Saturday, May 26, and Saturday, June 2.

His goal for his Eagle Scout project is to promote ‘Patriotism and Respect for the Flag’ to the Community.  He is educating his community to respect and retire Old Glory in an appropriate manner, providing the “Free American Flag Exchange” to allow community members to include their flags in the ceremony along with giving them a new one to use and giving honor to those who have served, protected, honored and defended the country to provide and maintain our symbol of freedom.
