Veterans Expo to be held at Cooper Center on Nov. 8

MCALLEN, TX (November 7, 2017) – Veterans at South Texas College are requesting the community come out and participate in a day of celebration of our nation’s heroes past and present.

South Texas College will hold Veterans Day ceremonies at all five campuses beginning on Nov. 9 in Starr County and Mid-Valley campuses at 9 a.m.

Veterans Day events will then take place on Nov. 10 at the Pecan Campus at 9 a.m., Technology Campus at 11 a.m., and Nursing and Allied Health at 1 p.m.

“We try to get people to understand that throughout the year, there is always an opportunity to thank a veteran,” said Javier Arredondo, Veterans Coordinator at South Texas College. “This is an opportunity for at least on one day to let students become aware that these are veterans who are getting their life back when they come to school. They need to be recognized and given thanks.”

The Office of Veterans Affairs at South Texas College has organized a Veterans Expo that will be held at three campuses beginning on Nov. 8.

The first Veterans Expo will take place at STC’s Pecan Campus on Nov. 8. The Mid Valley Veterans Expo will take place on Nov. 15, and the Technology Campus Expo will take place on Nov. 16. Times for all events will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Created as a resource for veterans in the community, the expo will consist of area vendors who will be on hand distributing information of the benefits and services available to them.

Vendors at the expo will assist veterans with applying for grants that can be used towards rent, utilities, daycare for children, tuition assistance and transportation.

Organizations attending will provide a wide range of services including legal aid, mental health care, veterans’ benefit claims assistance, hearing loss, home care, mortgage loans, small business start-up assistance and PTSD therapy assistance.

“I just want to add that it’s appreciated that people just come and attend. That’s enough thanks,” said Jessie Luna, Coordinator of Veteran Enrollment Services at STC. “To have people there is indicative of how the community feels about what the veterans did for them, so their presence means a lot.

“We are inviting people from the community and veterans to come so they can find out about their benefits,” Luna said. “This is not only for students, but those veterans in the community who want to stop by.”
