RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – José Ángel Fernández, a student at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley from McAllen, has earned a spot on the new music reality show Operación Triunfo USA.
Fernández, a psychology major with a minor in music technology, said he auditioned because he wanted to pursue a career in the music industry. “The opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming one of the great artists in the music industry inspired me to audition,” he said. “Having the chance to gain exposure, grow as an artist, and connect with people through my music made this an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

According to the information provided by UTRGV, the program brings together young performers from across the United States to live in a boarding-school environment called “The Academy,” where they receive coaching from industry professionals in multiple artistic disciplines.
Each week, contestants will perform in solo and group concerts. According to the show’s format, judges, teachers and audience members will determine which contestants remain in the competition, with the winner earning a music career opportunity.
Fernández said music has been a way for him to express himself and connect with others. “Being able to create something deeply personal that can also resonate with so many others is one of the most incredible feelings I have ever experienced,” he said.
He said his studies at UTRGV have prepared him for the competition. “Through my music technology minor, I’ve developed skills in music production, recording and the creative process that have helped shape me as both a musician and a producer,” he said. “Studying psychology has given me a deeper understanding of people, emotions and communication, which I believe also influences my songwriting and artistry.”
Fernández also thanked Dr. Jason Mitchell, a lecturer in the UTRGV School of Music, saying he “believed in my music project from day one and has been a constant source of encouragement.”
As he prepares to appear on the national stage, Fernández said he hopes his experience encourages other aspiring musicians. “The journey will require sacrifices, discipline and patience,” he said. “But if you stay committed, everything you invest along the way will be worth it.”
According to the announcement, Operación Triunfo USA will premiere on July 7 at 7/6 p.m. CDT on Telemundo and Peacock.
