June 26, 2026 — President Donald J. Trump issued a strongly worded statement on Truth Social on June 25, 2026, declaring what he described as the beginning of a political battle against communism, one day after New York City approved a historic rent freeze affecting more than one million residents living in rent-stabilized apartments.
In a post published on Truth Social, President Trump wrote:
“The Communists are finally making their move. I’ve been waiting and preparing for this for a long time. It’s easy to be a Communist — All you have to do is say, ‘I’ll give you everything,’ but that means you’re taking it away from others that have earned it. Over thousands of years, that Ideology has not worked once. The game is on. Enjoy watching! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
The president also shared the same message in a separate post, which was presented in a screenshot accompanying the statement.

Trump’s comments came as New York City’s Rent Guidelines Board voted on June 25 to approve a rent freeze for both one-year and two-year lease renewals for rent-stabilized apartments. The measure affects more than one million New Yorkers and marks the first time that two-year lease renewals have received a rent freeze.
Supporters of the decision celebrated the vote, saying it will provide financial relief for families facing high living costs. Under the approved policy, tenants renewing eligible leases will not face rent increases for the next two years, allowing many households to retain more of their income during a period of continued economic pressure.
However, the decision drew criticism from landlords and property owners, who argued that operating expenses—including maintenance, repairs, insurance, utilities, and property taxes—have continued to increase while rental income will remain unchanged. Some building owners warned that the freeze could force reductions in staffing, delay renovations, or limit maintenance work if expenses continue to outpace revenue.

According to reports aired by Bronx News 12, some property owners cautioned that reduced maintenance budgets could eventually affect building conditions and slow the renovation of vacant apartments. City officials have stated that they intend to address these concerns by pursuing policies to lower operating costs for building owners while preserving affordable housing.
President Trump’s Truth Social posts did not specifically reference the Rent Guidelines Board vote by name. However, his statements were published on the same day the board approved the rent freeze and described what he characterized as the beginning of a bigger ideological confrontation.
