Men’s Golf Improves to Finish 12th at GCU Invitational

PHOENIX, Arizona – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s golf team improved in each of the three rounds at the GCU Invitational to finish in 12th place on Tuesday at GCU Golf Course. 

After the Vaqueros opened with a first round 292, they posted a second round 286 before posting a final round 285 for a three-round score of 863. UTRGV finished just two shots out of the top-10 as they finished one shot back of Northern Colorado and two shots back of Eastern Michigan. 

Sophomore Taj Sutherland paced the Vaqueros with a three-round score of 210 to finish tied for 10th. Sutherland posted an even par 71 in the second round before shaving off two strokes in the final round with a two-under par 69.

Freshman Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque finished two shots back of Sutherland with a three-round score of 212 as he finished tied for 21st. Duque posted a second round one-under par 70 before posting an even-par 71 in the final round. 

Sophomore Leonardo Novella came in tied for 54th with a three-round score of 217 as he posted a second round one-under par 70 before carding a one-over par 72 in the final round. Sophomore Sebastian Lundberg finished in 111th with a three-round score of 230 after posting a second round 78 and then improving by five strokes in the final round with a 73. 

Senior Tennoshin Ogawa finished tied for 113th with a three-round score of 232 after posting a second round 75 and a final round 81. 

Host Grand Canyon won the team title with a three-round score of 834 after rounds of 269 and 286. UT Arlington’s Kyle Cox won the individual title with a three-round score of 202 with back-to-back rounds of 68.

The Vaqueros will be back in action on Monday, March 21, when they host The Big Texan Invitational at Comanche Trace in Kerrville.
