McAllen– Year-round sunshine, 80-degree winters, and a tropical climate make McAllen the sixth best place in the country to retire, according to personal finance guru Dave Ramsey’s analysis of retirement locales across the United States.

“Our Winter Texans have known that McAllen is a great place to retire for years, and it’s outstanding that now we are recognized around the nation,” said City of McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. “Our low cost of living, great senior entertainment, wide selection of restaurants and all that our border has to offer make McAllen the ideal place to retire.”

DaveRamsey.com sites the 123,000-square foot McAllen Public Library, formerly an abandoned Wal-Mart, as the city’s special feature.

The McAllen Public Library is the largest single floor public library in the nation. It sees an average of 60,000 visitors each month. Library amenities include: 16 meeting spaces, 116 computers, a café, teen area, an expanded children’s area and a collection of 342,000 items which are just some of the features that retirees would find attractive.

The article also notes the thousands of people from outside the state who flock to McAllen to escape colder winters up north. This influx of people boosts McAllen’s economy which helps make for a great quailty of life.

Bird-watching tops the list as things for retirees to do while in McAllen. The Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center is an urban sanctuary working to enrich people’s lives by sharing knowledge about birds, plants, and environmental stewardship in South Texas.

Located 70 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, McAllen boasts a population of more than 142,000 and is often referred to as the retail center of South Texas and Northern Mexico. In addition to all the free amenities, McAllen offers an extensive senior activity program that offers team and individual sports, musical concerts and cultural and arts performances, volunteer opportunities, hobbies and many other activities.
