Laredo, TX.  – Quintin Vargas introduced the literary world to Nate Shelley and his wife Miró in an intricate murder mystery –Iberian Ties– a couple of years ago.  The storyline followed the couple and a slew of interesting characters as they traveled from the Canary Islands to America.  Sadly for them, but luckily for the reader, their perils arise once more in Vargas’ second novel, The Unraveling.

Vargas, a native of Laredo who today makes his home in San Antonio, is scheduled to be in town on June 5 for a book signing event.  States Miguel Conchas, childhood friend of the author, “Vargas is an excellent storyteller, so even those not familiar with his writing are in for a treat as he brings some of his characters to life in reading excerpts from his books.  More than a book signing event, I’m sure he’ll make this an experience.”

Born and raised in Laredo, Quintin Vargas, III, graduated from Laredo’s Martin High School in 1966.  He soon left to continue his education and made a career as professor and administrator at the university level in various large universities around the country.  Following a stint in the private sector, where he still offers consulting services, he decided to follow one of his lifelong dreams – to write a novel.  Mind you, Vargas was no stranger to the literary world, having published a variety of articles and studies in education journals and books throughout his career. In fact, his dissertation was recognized with the John S. Brubacher Award by the University of Michigan in 1976. But, fiction was something entirely new. He launched his newfound career with Iberian Ties in 2019 and now he follows with The Unraveling, his second novel of a proposed trilogy.

Much of the storyline for both books revolves around the setting.  The vivid descriptions of Spanish dishes, wines, and even the character’s dresswear create a distinct backdrop for the murder mystery.  For that reason, finding an appropriate location for the June 5 book signing was essential.  Enter Bobby and Karla Gonzalez, owners of Tabernilla Bar de Tapas, acquaintances of the author, and very willing to host the event. Bobby, an excellent chef and connoisseur of Spanish cuisine, in fact offers to provide some insights into the preparation of dishes and selection of wines that day…. one more added treat to the affair.

For information about the book signing contact Miguel Conchas at the Laredo Chamber of Commerce at 956-722-9895 or email conchas@laredochamber.com.
