Hughes Sets Program Record in 400-meters Dash on Second Day of UTSA Invitational

San Antonio – Junior Ashley Hughes set the program record in the women’s 400-meter dash to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s and women’s track & field team at the UTSA Invitational on Saturday at Park West Athletics Complex.

Hughes crossed the finish line with a time of 54.37 seconds to finish in second place. She broke Vanessa Brown’s record of 54.79 seconds that was set in 2008.

Junior Dai’ja Coleman also posted a second place finish in the women’s triple jump after a leap of 12.11 meters while freshman Zarrey Sams finished in third with a leap of 11.28 meters. Coleman added an eighth-place finish in the 100-meter dash after crossing the finish line while freshman Mariana Hernandez came in ninth with a time of 13.52 seconds.

On the men’s side, freshman Yashawn Hamilton finished in sixth place in the 100-meter dash after posting a time of 10.92 seconds. He also added a 10th place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.43 seconds.

Junior Brandon Sanders posted a 10th place finish in the 400-meter dash after crossing the finish line with a time of 49.68 seconds. Freshman Max Carmona came in right behind Sanders in 11th with a time of 49.89 seconds and freshman Mariano Hernandez finished in 12th with a time of 50.58 seconds.

UTRGV will be back in action on March 22 when it competes at the Cactus Cup in Kingsville and at the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio.
