Edinburg, TX – The Hidalgo County Courthouse will remain closed Tuesday, September 1, 2026, as county officials continue evaluating damage caused by a vehicle that crashed into the building’s front entrance Sunday night.

Hidalgo County has engaged fire marshal and safety personnel and engineering professionals to assess the extent of the damage and determine whether the building is safe for employees and the public.

“The safety of our employees, courthouse visitors and the public must come first,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said. “We understand that this closure may create inconveniences, but we will not reopen the courthouse until the appropriate professionals have completed their assessments and determined that the building can safely resume operations.”

The county continues to coordinate with judicial leadership regarding court operations, scheduled hearings and jury proceedings affected by the closure.

Employees, jurors and members of the public scheduled to report to the courthouse Tuesday should not report to the building unless they receive specific instructions from the appropriate county office or court.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Edinburg Police Department.
