Chirchir Finishes Near Top of Pack at NCAA South Central Regional Championships

WACO – Junior Abraham Chirchir finished 17^th out of 158 in the 10K to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) cross country teams at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships on Friday at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.

Chirchir finished in a time of 31.21.3. He was as high as 13^th at the 8K mark, which he reached in 24:50.7, and 15^th at the 9K mark, which he reached in 28:07.9.

Sophomore Alex Munoz also finished in the top half, placing 61^st with a time of 32:58.0.

Texas’ Haftu Knight won the individual title with a time of 30:10.4.

As a team, the men finished 15^th out of 21 with an average time of 33:22, the same as 14^thplace Stephen F. Austin (SFA). UTRGV recorded 360 points while SFA was at 353.

Texas won the team title with an average time of 30:36 and 35 points.

On the women’s side, junior Anahi Romo led the way by finishing 77^th out of 169 with a time of 22:49.0 in the 6K. Freshman Nikki Rowe alum Janie Delgado set a new personal record with a time of 24:29.9.

Rice’s Grace Forbes won the individual title with a time of 19:59.3.

As a team, the women finished 20^th out of 23 with an average time of 23:48 for 548 points.

Arkansas won the team title with an average time of 20:44 and 27 points.
