BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Brownsville & Rio Grande International Railway(BRG), an OmniTRAX affiliate railroad, is bringing Operation Lifesaver’s rail safety education to Brownsville elementary schools. Pedestrian rail trespass is a leading cause of rail fatalities and injuries. These preventable incidents stem from pedestrians trespassing on active railroads throughout the state. See Tracks? Think Train® Week 2026 is Sept 21-27 and BRG is inviting local Brownsville schools to apply for free classroom training to participate in this important annual safety program.

“With schools back in session, it’s especially important that we help our local children to make safe choices whenever they are near railroads,” said BRG President Shariff Gonnella. “Whether it is curiosity or distraction, railroads pose serious risk when pedestrians venture onto railroad property. Operation Lifesaver provides a great opportunity to reach students and build true life-saving rail safety habits.”

See Tracks? Think Train® Week is a concentrated week of rail safety education focusing attention on the importance of making safe choices when driving or walking near railroad tracks and trains. Operation Lifesaver’s safety partners engage more than one million people nationwide in annual safety education. Safety partners include federal, state and local government agencies, safety organizations and America’s railroads.

BRG team member Andrea Meneses is an Operation Lifesaver Authorized Volunteer (OLAV), providing free rail safety education presentations to local audiences. See Tracks? Think Train® Week classroom training can be scheduled by emailing Andrea Meneses at ameneses@omnitrax.com by September 15, 2026. Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) data shows that highway-rail grade crossing collisions and pedestrian trespass on tracks together account for over 95% of all railroad fatalities.
