Texas Border Business

McALLEN, Texas – When she first began her journey at South Texas College (STC), 19-year-old Valeria Hernandez was not entirely sure where the experience would take her. What she did know was that she wanted to create opportunities for herself and become an example for her younger siblings.
Now, a sophomore studying Business Administration, the first-generation college student has found much more than an education at STC. Through the work-study program, student leadership and active involvement on campus, she has discovered a stronger sense of confidence, purpose and belonging.
“Everyone was so nice and welcoming, and the campuses looked amazing when I first visited STC,” she said. “I felt motivated from the beginning. STC felt like it was a place where I could grow and really start my college journey.”
She has always envisioned pursuing a career in the business world. She chose Business Administration because she believes the degree will provide her with the knowledge and flexibility to pursue a variety of opportunities.
“I’ve always pictured myself working for a huge corporation in New York, wearing my black pantsuit and red-bottom heels,” she said. “Business has always felt like the field I wanted to be in, and I know this degree can open a lot of doors for me.”
While academics are an important part of her STC experience, some of her favorite memories have come from the people she has met along the way.
“I’ve met so many people at STC who I probably never would have crossed paths with otherwise,” she said. “I’ve made so many friends, and they’ve helped me come out of my shell. I’ve become more of an extrovert, and that has been one of the best parts of college for me.”
Her growth has also extended beyond the classroom through her work-study position with STC Mid-Valley’s Student Activities and Wellness Department. There, she helps students navigate campus, print schedules, prepare for events and create photo backdrops while interacting with students and employees across campus.
“I really enjoy being able to help people,” she said. “Whether I’m helping someone find a classroom or setting up an event, I like knowing that I’m making someone’s day a little easier. This job has helped me grow in so many ways and has pushed me to become a better version of myself.”
Looking for another way to become involved, Hernandez joined STC’s Student Leadership Academy (SLA).
“Joining a club was completely out of my comfort zone, but I decided to give it a chance,” she said. “Now I feel much more involved with STC. I enjoy the workshops because they challenge me to think differently, and it’s nice walking around campus and recognizing so many familiar faces.”
Throughout her journey, her parents remained her greatest source of encouragement.
“My parents are my motivation,” she said. “Even when they don’t completely understand what I’m talking about when it comes to college, they always try their best to support me and guide me in the right direction. Whenever I’m exhausted or stressed, I can hear them in the back of my mind telling me, ‘Que le eche ganas.’”
As the oldest daughter, Hernandez also understands the significance of being the first to pursue a college education.
“No one in my family had ever made it to college, so this is a really big deal,” she said. “I knew I had to set a good example for my siblings so they could see that they can do it too. I want them to follow their own path and know that college is possible for them.”
Her experience at STC has also helped prepare her for life beyond graduation. From building her resume and practicing for professional interviews to developing social skills and networking with others, she said STC has given her a clearer picture of what it takes to succeed in the real world.
“I came to STC not knowing exactly what I wanted to do with my life,” she said. “But along the way, I’ve learned how to present myself professionally, build connections and prepare for my future. Most importantly, I’ve found a version of myself that I didn’t know existed. I’ve grown so much and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”
Her goals extend well beyond earning her associate degree. She plans to continue her education in STC’s Organizational Leadership program to earn her bachelor’s degree by 2029. She also plans to pursue real estate certification to expand her knowledge and career opportunities.
“STC has given me the opportunity to grow, meet people, become more confident and prepare for my future,” she said. “I’m proud of the person I’m becoming, and I know this is only the beginning.”
