Dr. Daniel P. King, PSJA Superintendent and the American Association of School Administrators 2013 Texas Superintendent of the Year, addressed the 2013 VAMOS Scholars class, parents, and banquet attendees as the event’s guest speaker.  His message focused on overcoming obstacles, reaching success and giving back to the community.

The VAMOS starts accepting application in October and has a deadline of April 1 of each year.  Scholarship recipients attend universities all over the nation including Yale, MIT, Brown, University of Texas Austin, University of Texas Pan American, Texas A&M and many more institutions.

Graduated VAMOS scholars continue their involvement with the organization as mentors and volunteers.  Giving back to the community is one of the principles that VAMOS promotes to its scholars.

Along with scholarship funding, VAMOS also provides its students with a network of resources through their Mentorship Program.  Students are assigned a mentor to guide them through their four years in college and ensure their success.

Founded in 1996, VAMOS continues to improve and impact the Rio Grande Valley by providing educational opportunities for post-secondary education. Its mission is to assist commendable students from Hidalgo, Starr, and Cameron Counties with funding for their Bachelor’s Degree.

The inspiration for VAMOS came from concerned civic leaders who realized that more needed to be done to help Valley students obtain an education and empower them to make a difference in their families and community.
