The fact that SpaceX is coming to Brownsville is seen by Valley residents as a big plus to South Texas.

On September 22, 2013 the greater Brownsville community came together at the Brownsville Sports Park to celebrate SpaceX joining the Brownsville community and the positive economic impact to the region.

Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley have several new economic and community projects underway that will clearly place South Texas at the top of economic development.

Here are just a few examples of new economic opportunities coming to the Rio Grande Valley and Brownsville:

  1. Launch Rockets:  The world’s first vertical rocket launch site will be at Boca Chica Beach, on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico and South Texas.
  2. Launch Direct Jobs:  SpaceX plans to create 500 jobs over a 10-year period and invest $80 to $100 million in capital investment.
  3. Launch Indirect Jobs:  The direct economic impact by SpaceX would be more than $51 million annually in salaries. Economic experts figure another 300 to 400 jobs will be created from suppliers either moving to or expanding in the Brownsville area.
  4. Launch New Local Space Cluster:  The new space industry will enhance the supply-chain-logistics of the Brownsville-Matamoros local manufacturing base, which is a vital part of the automotive industrial corridor stretching from Central Mexico, through Texas and the Southern U.S. states. TBB
