WASHINGTON— Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) joined credit union executives, credit union advocates and organizations at the annual Network of Latino Credit Unions & Professional (NLCUP) Networking Reception. The Congressman addressed the audience on the importance of credit unions and how they can benefit Hispanic individuals in underserved communities in his district.

The NLCUP was incorporated in 2006 to promote the credit union philosophy within the Latino community and provide support to credit union professionals who are engaged in serving the Latino market.  NLCUP’s members represent credit unions located nationwide that also provide services to Hispanic communities.

“In my district, credit unions are very important to the Latino community where 26 percent of the population lives below the poverty line,” said Congressman Cuellar. “These unions are unique in that they provide support to underserved people, such as those historically underrepresented and underserved, which may not otherwise have access to financial support.

“I have personally seen the far-reaching effects that these unions have had on my constituents— people have the option of applying for loans that will help raise their credit score and pay off debt. Ultimately, credit unions help many people achieve financial goals which so many other hardworking Latino-Americans strive for.”

The Congressman continued, “I would like to thank the Network of Latino Credit Unions and Professionals for their great work in providing financial support to the Hispanic community. Because of them, Hispanics all over the country can get help starting a business, hiring employees or equipment, and supporting their families financially.

“Moving forward, I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to ensure that credit unions, especially ones that offer services to underserved communities, can continue to expand their reach to people in my district.”
