The Rio Grande Valley is celebrating local elections in different municipalities. McAllen is one of them where five professionals are seeking to become mayor and Districts 1, 2, 3 and 6 have plenty of activity as well.

The current District 3 commissioner Omar Quintanilla is seeking a second term, and in this issue, you can learn more about him and his plans for his district.

On other news: the Franchise Tax Due Date is Extended. In response to the February 2021 statewide severe winter weather, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts is extending the due date for 2021 Texas franchise tax reports from May 15 to June 15, 2021. The extension aligns the agency with the Internal Revenue Service, which earlier this week extended the April 15 tax-filing and payment deadline to June 15 for all Texas residents and businesses. The due date extension applies to all franchise taxpayers. It is automatic, and taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms.

As a reminder, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts does not garnish wages or seize Social Security benefits. Any correspondence claiming such, should be considered fraudulent.

On another note: This March, the McAllen City Commission proclaimed the month of March as Women’s History Month, and March 8 as International Women’s Day in McAllen; it is a celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.  City leaders are proud to point out that the City of McAllen is unique amongst Rio Grande Valley and border municipalities, with an equal number of men and women who are directors of City of McAllen departments.

Newswise – Good customer service can lead to higher profits, even for utilities without competition. In Lily Tomlin’s classic SNL comedy sketch, her telephone operator “Ernestine” famously delivers the punchline, “We don’t care. We don’t have to. We’re the Phone Company.” But new research finds that satisfied customers mean increased profits even for public utilities that don’t face competition. More in this issue.

Vantage Bank Texas and seven-time LPGA winner and major champion, Angela Stanford, are partnering to provide educational opportunities for children whose families have been impacted by cancer.

In an effort to make a substantial difference in the community, Angela formed The Angela Stanford Foundation in 2009 to provide scholarships for students whose families have been affected by cancer.

The Foundation currently supports 20 college students through its scholarship program. “I believe you need a purpose in life and when these kids get hit hard, whether its themselves or their parents, we like to try to help them keep some purpose.” said Angela about her foundation.
