ALAMO, Texas – Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD’s Audie Murphy Middle School, one of the district’s A-rated campuses, has been awarded the Purple Star Campus Designation for the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 school years, recognizing the campus’s commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families.
The designation, awarded by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), recognizes schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to creating welcoming, supportive environments for students whose families are connected to the military. Purple Star campuses work to address the unique educational and transition needs military-connected students may experience as their families navigate changes in duty assignments, schools and communities.
“Every student deserves to feel welcomed, supported and connected to their school community,” said Audie Murphy Middle School Principal Dr. Lydia Treviño. “At Audie Murphy Middle School, we are committed to creating an environment where our military-connected students and their families know they are valued and have a strong support system. Earning the Purple Star designation celebrates the dedication and commitment that we have for our military families.”
In addition to Audie Murphy Middle earning the Purple Star Campus Designation, PSJA Memorial Early College High School (2025-2026) and Dr. William Long Elementary (2024-2025) also earned designations.
To earn the Purple Star Campus Designation, schools must meet specific requirements established by TEA, including:
- Designating a campus-based military liaison to serve as a point of contact for military-connected students and families.
- Creating and maintaining a resource webpage with information and support services for military-connected families.
- Implementing a campus transition program to help students adjust when entering or leaving the school.
- Providing staff development focused on issues and needs relevant to military-connected students.
- Implementing at least one additional initiative supporting military families, such as adopting a resolution of support or participating in activities such as Month of the Military Child.
The designation reflects Audie Murphy Middle School’s efforts to ensure military-connected students have access to the resources, relationships and support they need to successfully transition into the campus community and thrive academically and socially.
“At PSJA ISD, we recognize that supporting students means understanding the circumstances that shape their educational experience,” said PSJA Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias. “Audie Murphy Middle School has demonstrated that commitment by creating intentional supports for military-connected students and their families. We are proud of the campus for earning this designation and creating a welcoming environment where military-connected students and their families feel valued, supported and part of the PSJA community.”
The Purple Star Campus Designation adds to PSJA ISD’s ongoing commitment to creating inclusive school communities where students and families are supported throughout their educational journey.
