PHARR – Three Dollar General representatives visited Kennedy Middle School Wednesday, Nov. 28 to award the campus with a $10,000 Dollar General Youth Literacy Foundation Grant.

The donation is part of Dollar General’s “Thanks Giving” campaign, which aims to serve their communities by supporting literacy and education ahead of the upcoming holidays.

According to Kennedy Middle School Principal Luis Villarreal, they plan to use the grant money to promote their literacy efforts and create incentives for students to enhance their reading habits.

“We’d love to build a literacy center. It looks like a big birdhouse full of books where students can bring a book and take a book and enjoy reading,” Villarreal said. “Another idea is to promote our book club. We’re going to have meetings and after-school events for reading.”

Villarreal shared his excitement for the grant during a Kennedy Middle School staff meeting and expressed his gratitude to Dollar General and his staff for their help and support.

“I just want to thank Dollar General for this very generous grant for literacy for our kids,” Villarreal said. “I also want to thank my staff. My staff is awesome; the teachers, office staff, the administrators— we have an awesome staff. I just want to thank everyone.”
