WESLACO – Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Commissioner David L. Fuentes invites all civic-minded residents to join in the Delta Lake Park Beautification Project in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, January 21.

Delta Lake Park is located on North FM88, north of Charles Green Road in Monte Alto, but all are invited to join in the Day of Service.

In 1994, Congress designated MLK Day as a national day of service. It is the only federal holiday that is observed as a national day of service is an opportunity for people from all walks of life to join together to strengthen communities, empower individuals, create solutions to social problems and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community,” said Fuentes.

“We will honor Dr. King’s legacy by bringing youth and adults together in helping to create a clean, safe and beautiful place for community gatherings and family outings,” Fuentes said. “Dr. King once said ‘Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.’ I hope that the Delta Lake Park Beautification project becomes the start of a life of service for the students who have already committed to help and everyone who joins us.”

Among the volunteers already committed to help are students from Monte Alto ISD, Edcouch-Elsa ISD, and La Villa ISD. The goal at Delta Lake Park is to paint 140 picnic tables in preparation for the installation of new barbeque pits that will be installed at a later date.

Everyone is invited to show up to help on Monday. Please call Hidalgo County Precinct 1 at (956) 968-8733 for more information.
