RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS –  Every day UTRGV’s student-athletes work hard to get the “Ws” on the courts, fields, links and track, but they also work hard within their communities to inspire and make a difference.

On Friday, October 11, more than 200 student-athletes will fan out into the community as part of the UTRGV Department of Intercollegiate Athletics’ second annual Champions Serve Day.

“Part of the goal of Champions Serve Day is to create a community of student-athletes who strive for excellence in their individual growth and societal pursuits, which makes them champions,” said Chasse Conque, UTRGV vice president and director of athletics. “We also know the importance of giving back to the community, and before we can ask the Valley to rally behind us, we need to rally behind the Valley.”

Last year, the event was held in the spring and included the student-athletes helping restore a house with Habitat for Humanity, preparing meals and sorting food at the Food Bank RGV, and volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club.

This year, the student-athletes will be showing their commitment to the community at the following locations:

  • Freshmen – Setting up Special Olympics Bocce Competition, UTRGV Track and Soccer Field, located on University Drive, Edinburg, 2-4 p.m.
  • Sophomores – Food Bank of RGV, 724 N Cage Blvd #3105, Pharr, 3-5 p.m.
  • Juniors – Edinburg Children’s Hospital, 1102 W. Trenton Rd., Edinburg, 3-5 p.m.
  • Seniors – Edinburg Boys & Girls Club, 702 Cullen St, Edinburg, 4-6 p.m.

During the 2018-2019 academic year, UTRGV’s student-athletes completed 2,862 hours of community service while engaging with 30 different organizations. In addition, UTRGV Athletics collected more than 2,500 pounds of food to donate to those in need.
