MISSION, Texas – Police officers frequently respond to situations that are tense, unpredictable, and rapidly evolving. In these circumstances, officers may be required to make split-second decisions based on the actions of a suspect and the circumstances confronting them.
Officers rely on their training and experience as they work to de-escalate situations and, when appropriate, utilize less-lethal options to preserve life while maintaining public safety. Unfortunately, some situations continue to escalate. When officers perceive an immediate threat to their own lives or the lives of others, they are trained and authorized to take action to neutralize that threat.
The outcome of an officer-involved shooting is never easy. These incidents impact everyone involved, including the individual and their family, the officers involved, their families, and the broader community.
As police officers, we recognize that the authority entrusted to us comes from the community we serve. With that authority comes the responsibility to protect life, maintain public safety, and ensure that our actions are consistent with the law and the policies governing our department.
In connection with the recent officer-involved shooting, every action taken during the incident must be carefully examined to determine whether those actions were consistent with the law and the authority vested in our officers. There is no doubt that this incident is devastating for all those affected.
