RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – Nearly 34,000 students will return to classrooms across 51 IDEA Public Schools campuses in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) when the 2026–27 school year begins on Monday, August 17.

This first day of school marks a historic milestone for IDEA Palmview College Preparatory and IDEA Harlingen College Preparatory, as both campuses welcome their first-ever senior class. Opened in 2020, the schools have added one grade level each year and are now fully scaled, serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

To commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime moment, IDEA Palmview seniors will celebrate their “Last First Day of School.” During morning arrival, seniors will invite their parents to walk them to their homeroom one final time while carrying kindergarten-style backpacks, symbolizing how far they have come since their earliest school days. Later that morning, the schools will unveil a Senior Class Wall, celebrating the inaugural graduating class and the legacy they are creating for future generations.

“This first day of school is especially meaningful because we’re celebrating students who have grown alongside their schools,” said Jill Dominguez, Area Superintendent for IDEA Public Schools. “Watching our first senior classes walk through the doors for their final first day is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when students are supported from kindergarten through graduation. We are excited to celebrate this milestone with our families and look forward to seeing these students take the next step toward college.”

Throughout the school year, IDEA Palmview and IDEA Harlingen will recognize the inaugural Class of 2027 through special traditions, celebrations, and College Signing Day, honoring the students who helped shape the culture and legacy of their campuses.

IDEA Public Schools will also be implementing the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) under the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs for the upcoming 2026-27 school year. IDEA schools in the RGV will provide nutritious breakfast and lunch to all children at no charge. No action is required from families for their child(ren) to participate in the free meal offerings and this will eliminate the collection of meal applications for free, reduced-price, and paid student meals.
