EDINBURG, TX – On the heels of several local initiatives to manage the growing numbers of asylum seekers and other immigrants in our community, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez praised our often-forgotten local immigration officials for their dedication and professionalism.

“The men and women of the Department of Homeland Security, including Customs and Border Protection, its law enforcement arm, the U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement are too often criticized for doing what they are hired to do: protect our borders,” Judge Cortez said. “Immigration is a hot topic in our country right now and the failure of Congress to reform our immigration laws and President Biden to implement less intrusive policies should not reflect on the professionalism of these law enforcement officers.” Cortez went on, “There is a tendency to want to blame immigration authorities for enforcing the laws and policies set out by those in Washington. I believe that is unfair and I want to go on record saying that local immigration agents are a vital part of providing safety for our community. They are currently working under almost impossible conditions under a constant threat of a deadly virus. I feel strongly compelled to say that I appreciate their dedication and professionalism during difficult times. Please join me in thanking them.”
