ALAMO – Governor Greg Abbott visited Alamo to promote Texas’ annual Tax-Free Weekend, reminding families that qualifying back-to-school items will be tax-free at retailers across the state from Friday, August 7, through midnight Sunday, August 9.
“Tax-Free Weekend puts real money back in the pockets of Texas families as they buy clothes and school supplies for their kids,” said Governor Abbott. “I encourage every parent to take advantage of these savings at retailers across our state and to support the small businesses that form the backbone of the Texas economy.”
During his remarks, Governor Abbott reminded Texans that tax-free items can be found at all retailers across the state. He also stressed the importance of supporting small businesses when they shop. Governor Abbott also emphasized his mission to keep Texas the most affordable place to live, work, and raise a family. The lifeblood of the Texas economy, more than 99 percent of businesses in Texas are small businesses. In 2025, Governor Abbott signed HCR 9 to designate the first Saturday of every month as Small Business Saturday.

Following the Governor’s remarks, the Walmart Foundation presented a $10,000 grant and donated backpacks for students to PSJA Memorial Early College High School Principal Dr. Raquel Garcia.
The Governor was also joined by Alamo Mayor J.R. Garza, Walmart Director of Government & Public Affairs Ivan Jaime, Walmart Community Champion Johnathan Navarrete, and Walmart Academy Lead Diana Cantu.
This year, Tax-Free Weekend runs from Friday, August 7, through midnight on Sunday, August 9. The holiday is expected to deliver over $140 million in tax savings for Texans. Since its inception in 1999, the “back-to-school” sales tax holiday has saved Texans more than $2 billion. Senate Bill 1415, signed into law last year by Governor Abbott, established a uniform weekend for the holiday so more families benefit regardless of local school start dates.
