On Sunday, April 20, 2025, at approximately 3:42 a.m., Edinburg Police units responded to the area of Hill Country Drive and Pin Oak Street in reference to suspicious individuals jumping a fence and running toward Bicentennial Park. An officer arrived and began checking the area when he observed two subjects in the park matching the description. As he turned his police unit around, one of the individuals fled the scene. The officer made contact with 18-year-old Daniel Reyna of Edinburg. Following a brief interview, the officer placed Reyna under arrest for Possession of a Controlled Substance (Xanax).

Around the same time, a call for service was received regarding a vehicle burglary in the area. Officers contacted the victim and obtained information that led them to believe Daniel Reyna was a suspect in the burglary.

At 7:23 a.m., Edinburg Dispatch received another report of a vehicle burglary, this time in the 1000 block of Hill Country Drive. The victim reported that a handgun and approximately $2,000 in cash were stolen from the vehicle.

Edinburg Police Investigators teamed up with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Combined Auto Theft Task Force to quickly solve these cases.

Through investigation, investigators identified the second suspect as 17-year-old Angel Lopez, also of Edinburg. Investigators obtained Lopez’s address and set up surveillance. They were informed that Lopez and his mother were at church and were provided a description of their vehicle. The vehicle was later located near McColl Road and University Drive, and a traffic stop was conducted. Officers and investigators made contact with Lopez’s mother, who advised that he was at home with his brother at an apartment located on the 1800 block of W. Samano. Investigators were able to take Lopez into custody without incident. A consent to search was granted by Lopez’s mother, and the stolen handgun was recovered inside the apartment.

Both Reyna and Lopez will face charges of Burglary of a Vehicle and Theft of a Firearm. Reyna will also face an additional charge for Possession of a Controlled Substance.
