Theresa Ann Alarcon Named Point Isabel ISD Lone Superintendent Finalist

Point Isabel ISD has named Theresa “Teri” Alarcon the lone finalist to replace retiring Superintendent Dr. Lisa Garcia.

A Brownsville native, Alarcon earned her bachelor’s in elementary education from the University of Texas-Pan American and masters’ degrees in educational administration and guidance counseling as well as her superintendent’s certificate from the University of Texas Brownsville.

Alarcon has 29 years of education experience at BISD where she started her career in education at El Jardin Elementary in 1989 and taught for nine years before becoming the campus guidance counselor. In 1998 Alarcon began her career in administration at BISD as the Assistant Principal and Dean of Instruction. From 2003 until 2006 Alarcon was named Principal at Sharp Elementary and from 2007 until 2014 she was the Hannah High School Principal. In 2014 Alarcon was named the Area Assistant Superintendent of the BISD High Schools where she has implemented various initiatives for BISD.

Alarcon brings with her strong leadership and communication skills, strong knowledge of understanding secondary curriculum, positive relationships with higher educational institutions such as TSC and UTRGV. She also has experience in collaborating with the community for school district engagement. Alarcon has also served on various community boards and committees; United Way Board, Valley Regional Hospital Board Member, UTRGV Presidential Search Committee Member in 2013, RGV Lead Executive Committee Board Member, and many others.

At the end of the state-imposed 21-day waiting period, the Board is expected to make the decision final on February 26.
