The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley honored more than 50 faculty members during its annual Faculty Excellence Awards, held Thursday, May 3, at the TSC Arts Center in Brownsville. UTRGV hosted the first HESTEC GreenPowerUSA South Texas Electric Car Competition, held April 6-7 at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport. Thirty two teams representing middle school, high school and colleges from across South Texas competed in the competition, which delivered the excitement of motorsport to inspire students to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) studies. As Dr. Lino Garcia Jr., Ph.D., approaches his 84th birthday in January, the UTRGV Professor Emeritus of Spanish Literature says change is what keeps him motivated. Garcia has ridden waves of major change in the Rio Grande Valley’s higher education offerings, going back to his college days in the 1960s at Pan American College, to UTRGV and its sprawling distributed-campus university that serves some 28,000 students throughout the Valley and beyond. He started working at Pan American College in 1967 as a Spanish instructor. Fifty years later, he is still teaching with the same enthusiasm for his students and their success.
