ALAMO – The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District School Board of Trustees approved the substantial completion of the PSJA Memorial Early College High School Aquatics Facility located on Ridge Rd. in Alamo during the April 12, 2021, school board meeting.

The project, which totals $5.8 million, equips the high school with its own swimming facility that includes an instructional pool and a competition pool. The competition pool—which will also be known as the practice pool— has 10 lanes and is 25-yards by 25-meters in size. The instructional pool has three lanes, is 3 ft. in depth and is ADA accessible as there is a sloped entryway.

The 6,146 sq. ft. facility also includes a spectator seating area, a large multi-purpose classroom, dressing rooms, showers with lockers, restroom facilities and an office area. Although it is an outdoor swimming facility, they have a canopy to provide shade for the swimmers.

“We are excited to provide this beautiful facility for our students at PSJA Memorial,” said PSJA School Board President Jorge Zambrano. “This Aquatics Facility will help ensure they get to build their Swim and Dive Team and continue their competitive edge. It is also a great asset to the entire community as we plan to open it for public use during the off season.”

In addition to the PSJA Memorial ECHS Aquatics Facility, the construction of the PSJA Early College High School Aquatics Facility in San Juan was completed earlier this year. The projects combined had a total cost of $11.8 million.

“We are proud to offer these state-of-the-art facilities for our students,” said PSJA ISD Superintendent Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo. “This is one of two swimming facilities that will allow students to practice and compete throughout the year. Thank you to our School Board of Trustees and the overall community for supporting these innovative projects at PSJA ISD.”

The PSJA ISD Swim and Dive Program has been very successful with many athletes winning district championships and advancing to State competition. Just this past week, Isaac Velasquez from PSJA Southwest ECHS and PSJA Early College HS athletes Natalie Bravo and Julio Gomez achieved All-State honors.
