Texas Border Business

Greta Cortez, a student at McAllen ISD’s McAllen Memorial High School, has been named a national semifinalist for a full scholarship by the U.S. Department of State through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y).

NSLI-Y is a rigorous overseas language and cultural program. She has applied to travel to South Korea to study Korean during the summer of 2020. Greta’s passion is language learning. She has been studying Japanese, Korean and Russian privately. She is fully bilingual in English and Spanish plus she has been studying French at Memorial High. She is a member of the Spanish Honor Society after challenging and obtaining a 5 on the AP Spanish test. She is also the Secretary of the French Honor Society.

Greta plays the cello and has earned the first chair for McAllen ISD at the All-Region competitions the last two years in a row. She is the president of the Orchestra Student Council and she is a Student Ambassador at Memorial.
