PHARR –  A librarian at Pharr-San Juan Alamo ISD (PSJA) has been selected as a winner of the Capstone “The Power of Librarians” National Photo Contest. Amy Marquez, librarian at Marcia Garza Elementary in Alamo, is the only librarian from the Rio Grande Valley and one of 12 librarians in the Nation selected for the contest.

Celebrating the key role librarians play, the contest invited communities to nominate a school or public library media specialist who makes meaningful connections with students. Winning photos and stories are currently being showcased in a special edition 2018 calendar.

“I’m proud to be one of two Texas librarians to be featured nationally in the Capstone calendar,” shared Marquez. “Capstone is a fantastic children’s publishing company that I feel honored to represent.  Our students love their books and we regularly use them in our library.”

From encouraging students to develop a love of reading to teaching them about makerspaces, robotics, coding and digital literacy, the librarian’s work and dedication does not go unnoticed.

“Mrs. Marquez is a dynamic librarian that always strives to be at the forefront of the field of library science,” said Narda Lugo, teacher at Ford Elementary in Pharr, who nominated her for the contest. “She is a go-getter who has received various awards and has even been featured on the cover of the Texas Library Association Journal.”

Congratulations!
