Edinburg, Texas – Emergency preparedness fairs will be held at County Community Resource Centers beginning Wednesday. The annual fairs are designed to assist residents in planning for weather-related emergencies.

Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia, who also serves as the county’s Emergency Management Director, said Dare to Prepare serves to provide tools to residents that will help them better prepare for disasters.

“With hurricane season underway, it is important for residents to be informed and prepared before disaster strikes,” said Garcia. “Preparation goes beyond putting together a kit, among other things, it also involves removing debris, which contributes to flooding, and knowing when to evacuate.”

High winds, heavy rainfall, tornadoes, and flooding can potentially cause loss of life and catastrophic damage to property. Two keys to weather safety are to prepare for the risks and to act on those preparations when alerted by emergency officials, said Emergency Management Coordinator Ricardo Saldaña.

Now in its ninth year, Dare to Prepare is a joint effort with the Texas A&M Colonias Program, Hidalgo County Office of Emergency Management, Commissioners Court, CRC directors, and local agencies and businesses. The fairs are free and open to the public.

The fairs are held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the following locations:
