WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) voted in favor of H.R. 1230, Protect Older Workers Against Age Discrimination Act, to level the playing field for older workers and restore their rights to fight back against age discrimination. Congressman Gonzalez is a co-sponsor of the legislation. The bill passed with an overwhelming bipartisan vote: 261 to 155.

The bill amends the Age Discrimination Act of 1967 to establish an unlawful employment practice against age discrimination.

“Ageism in the workplace occurs every day across the United States and is blatant discrimination against older Americans,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “We fight for marginalized groups every day in Congress and it’s time we protect older workers against age-related bias. I am committed to fighting age discrimination and will continue to push for equality in the workplace for all Americans.”

Age discrimination is a key reason it takes unemployed older workers nearly a full year, on average, to find another job.  And when they do land a new job, it’s often for less money, which can have a crushing impact on older workers’ long-term financial security and ability to live independently as they age.

In 2018, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the nation’s workforce watchdog, issued a report stating that age discrimination remains a significant and costly problem for workers, their families and our economy. According to the AARP, nearly two out of three workers ages 45 and older have seen or experienced age discrimination on the job.
