City of Laredo Mayor & Council Commend Distinguished Laredoans

Laredo, Texas – City of Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz and members of the Council presented special awards and recognitions to local citizens and groups on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, for their distinguished achievements. Likewise, Mayor Saenz, members of the Council, and City Management addressed the family and friends of the recognized citizens, acknowledging their efforts to support the young athletes and first responders.

  • Recognition presented to the PONY 12U Bronco team for winning the Bronco World Series Championship in Laredo, Texas against the Ohio Prospects. This team is integrated by players from North and South Laredo and they are managed by Head Coach, Eduardo Rangel, and Assistant Coaches are Jose S. “Joey” Tellez, Jerry Salinas, Luis Cantu, Luis Valencia, and Mark Valencia. To all the members of the team, including their coaches and family members, City Council extends their congratulations and gratitude for the extraordinary work during the championship.

  • The City of Laredo also presented a certificate of recognition to the 2021 Laredo American Little League Majors 11-12 year old ball players for their undefeated journey in District 34, allowing them to advance to sectionals in Brownsville, Texas, and progressing to State in Abilene, Texas for the Little League Southwest State Tournament. The team is composed of players that have been together since they were 4 or 5 years old, so their bond is strong. Mayor, Council, and Laredo as a whole continue to encourage and cheer for this team along their path and looking forward to their success.

  • A special recognition was presented to Firefighter/Paramedic Sebastian Valero, Firefighter/Paramedic Jose Sanchez, EMS Captain/Paramedic Jorge Gomez, Captain Manuel Meza, Driver/Paramedic Peter Gonzalez, Firefighter/Paramedic Chris Nunez, and Officer Xavier Rubio who rendered immediate aid in a difficult situation. All attendants offered a standing ovation to this group of first responders for the success at assisting a patient during an unlikely emergency. Patient Jonathan Ponce suffered an unfortunate electrocution that led him to lose consciousness. Aid arrived and all the proper medical procedures were applied, resulting in a positive outcome for Mr. Ponce, who was present during this recognition and expressed his gratitude to all the first responders involved in saving his life.
