Harlingen, Texas– The City of Harlingen, The Harlingen Chamber of Commerce, and The Harlingen Community Improvement Board will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the redevelopment of the historic Baxter Building in Downton Harlingen.

For more than 50-years, the Baxter Building was the tallest high-rise in the Rio Grande Valley.  It served as home to insurance companies, doctors, dentists, attorneys, architects, realtors, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Nickel Plate Road Railroad Company, radio station KRGV, and other professionals who played a major role in the economic development of South Texas.

Mayor Chris Boswell says the City’s goal is to return it to its former glory as one of the most notable buildings in the Valley rich with its historic character.

“We are excited about this development in the middle of downtown and what it will bring to our community.  This project will help to turn an eyesore into a beautiful revitalized building and serve as an economic engine for the entire city.”

Since it was built in 1927 at the corner of A and Jackson Streets, the Baxter Building has had several owners and several names.  The current owners, Baxter Housing Partners, LP will rehab the 29,272 sq. ft. building and convert it into 24 housing units.

To mark the beginning of the rehabilitation project, a groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Wed. July 18, at 10 a.m.  The ceremony will be held at Lozano Plaza located at 106 South A Street which is across the street from the historic building.
