CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple introduced the iPhone Duo on Wednesday, marking the company’s entry into the foldable smartphone market with a device that opens to become the largest display ever offered on an iPhone.
According to a Sept. 9 news release from Apple, the iPhone Duo will start at $1,999 in the United States. Preorders begin Oct. 16, with availability starting Oct. 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, including the United States and Mexico.
When closed, the Duo has a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch inner display designed for viewing content, gaming and running multiple applications.
Apple said the Duo is its thinnest iPhone when opened and is about the size of a passport when closed. The device is available in Star White and Night Sky and is constructed from grade 5 titanium.
“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” Apple CEO John Ternus said in the company’s announcement.
Apple has redesigned iOS 27 to take advantage of the folding screen. Major changes include Split View, which lets users open two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time. Users can also open two windows of the same application and save pairs of apps for later use.
Apple’s new A20 Pro chip powers the device. Apple said the processor, combined with a custom vapor chamber for thermal management, is designed to support gaming, multitasking, and artificial intelligence workloads.
The Duo also incorporates Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI. According to Apple, Siri can use information from a user’s apps and what is displayed on the screen to answer questions and perform certain tasks.
Photography remains a major component of the new phone. The Duo includes a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera and a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra-Wide camera. Its two-screen design also lets people being photographed see a live preview on the outer display.
Apple said the folding design was engineered for durability, with a hinge containing more than 100 components. The company also said Ceramic Shield protects the back, while Ceramic Shield 2 protects the outer display. The device carries an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance.
Battery life comes from two batteries; one positioned on each side of the folding device. Apple says the Duo can provide up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display.
The iPhone Duo will be offered with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options. Apple lists the starting U.S. price at $1,999, or $83.29 per month for 24 months.
With the Duo, Apple is making its first major move into foldable smartphones while combining the larger display with its existing iPhone software, cameras, and services.
