MONTGOMERY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s golf team jumped out to the first day lead at the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational with rounds of 283 and 284 on Monday at Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Course.
UTRGV is the only team under par through the first two rounds as it posted a two-round total of 567. They hold a 10 shot lead over second place and host Sam Houston State, who turned in rounds of 290 and 287.
Leading the way for UTRGV were its seniors in Pedro Lamadridand Alvaro Hernandez, who are tied for third place with two-round totals of 140. Both Lamadrid and Hernandez posted back-to-back rounds of two-under par 70 as they sit just two shots off the lead held by Sam Houston State’s William Holcomb and Baylor’s Brandon Hoff who posted two-round totals of 138.
UTRGV had everyone in its lineup in the top-20 after the first day. Junior Henry Fisher and redshirt sophomore Alex Summers are tied for 14thwith a two-round total of 144. Fisher opened with a first round one-under par 71 before posting a second round 73 while Summers posted an opening round of 73 before carding a second round one-under par 71.
Junior Luca Portelli is a couple of shots back of Fisher and Summers as he opened with an even-par 72 and a second round 74 for a two-round total of 146 as he sits tied for 20th.
UTRGV will be wrap up the Bearkat Invitational on Tuesday with the final round starting at 8:30 a.m. in search of its second win of the spring season.
