President Donald Trump signed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” into law on July 4, 2025, a measure that includes funding to reimburse states and local governments for immigration and border-related expenses incurred since January 21, 2021.

According to legislative summaries, the law provides about $13.5 billion in reimbursement for border enforcement, detention, prosecutions, and other immigration-related costs. The measure applies to multiple states and local governments, not Texas alone.

Texas is expected to receive a significant share of the funding because of its spending on border security through Operation Lone Star. Governor Greg Abbott’s office said the state spent more than $11.1 billion on border enforcement efforts and requested full federal reimbursement.

In a January 2025 statement, Abbott called on Congress to repay Texas for what his office described as “historic border security efforts.” The governor’s office said Texas had spent billions responding to illegal crossings, border crime, and immigration enforcement measures along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The law does not guarantee a specific amount for Texas. However, state officials have publicly said they plan to seek reimbursement for the full cost of Operation Lone Star, which they estimate at roughly $11 billion.
