PHARR, Texas – The Office of Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez, in partnership with Hidalgo County Office of Emergency Management and Hidalgo County Fire Marshal, is proud to announce the launch of Storm Safe with Sunny, a fun and educational children’s puppet show focused on hurricane preparedness and family safety during severe weather events.

The kickoff event will take place Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Pharr Memorial Library.

Building on the success of last summer’s emotional wellness-focused puppet program, “Storm Safe with Sunny” will introduce children and families to important hurricane preparedness concepts through storytelling, interactive games, animated videos, and hands-on activities led by beloved puppet characters Sunny and Stormy.

Designed especially for young audiences, the program teaches children what hurricanes are, how families prepare before storms arrive, and simple ways children can stay calm and safe during emergencies. Key messages throughout the show emphasize listening to trusted adults, staying together during emergencies, packing comfort items and learning how hurricanes are formed.

Each child attending the program will receive a free coloring and activity booklet filled with preparedness tips and activities, as well as a chance to participate in interactive games. Additionally, parents will receive take-home resources and tips to keep children feeling safe during storms.

“Our goal is to help children feel informed, calm, and empowered during hurricane season,” said Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez. “When families prepare together and children understand what is happening, emergencies become less frightening. This program helps turn preparedness into something children can understand, remember, and practice with their families.”

Following the kickoff event, “Storm Safe with Sunny” will travel to libraries throughout Hidalgo County during the summer. To better accommodate working parents and provide more families the opportunity to attend, the program will also offer two evening performances and one Saturday presentation.
