Current Construction Highlights (Phase One)
Crews are currently on-site executing critical structural and foundational work. Active construction efforts are centered on several major milestones, including:
- Los Olmos Bridge Development: Intensive work is underway on the Los Olmos Bridge, spanning approximately 0.69 centerline miles (translating to 1.38 total miles of bridge infrastructure).
- Earthwork Operations: Teams are conducting extensive excavation and embankment operations to prepare the roadway’s foundation.
- Drainage Infrastructure: Contractors are actively installing vital cross culverts and reinforced concrete pipes to ensure long-term roadway durability and flood resilience.
Once this initial phase is complete, motorists will transition to a modern, divided highway featuring two 12-foot travel lanes, a 10-foot outside shoulder, and a 4-foot inside shoulder in each direction. The design also incorporates multiple strategically placed crossovers within the project limits to maximize traffic flow and safety.
Looking Ahead: Future Phases Announced
As Phase One advances, planning for the next segments of the corridor is already moving at an accelerated pace to keep up with the region’s growing transportation demands.
- Phase Two (FM 3167 to FM 649): This segment will continue the new divided highway footprint. The project is expected to go out for construction bids in September 2026.
- Phase Three (FM 649 to US 83 at Loma Blanca Rd.): Extending north of Roma High School, this final phase will complete the divided highway expansion. Bidding is projected to open in February 2028.
Motorists are reminded to look out for active work zones, slow down for construction crews, and observe all posted traffic advisories.
