CORPUS CHRISTI – Freshman and Brownsville Veterans alum Julie Lucio holds share of the individual lead after the first day of the Islander Classic to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s golf on Monday at Corpus Christi Country Club.
Lucio opened with a first round two-over par 74 before improving with an even-par 72 in the second round. Lucio is tied with Houston Baptist’s Kaity Cummings with a two-round score of 146.
Senior Emma Mesta sits just three shots behind Lucio in fifth place with a two-round score of 149. Mesta posted a first round one-over par 73 before following that up with a second round 76.
Junior Vicky Gonzalez is tied for 29thwith a two-round score of 162 after posting rounds of 83 in the first and then shaving off four strokes with a second round 79. Senior Michelle Moroles, sophomore Briana Garza, and junior Tilda Green are tied for 33rdwith a two-round score of 163. Moroles posted rounds of 83 and 80, Garza carded rounds of 82 and 81, and Green posted rounds of 81 and 82.
UTRGV is in fifth place after the first day with a two-round score of 619. UTRGV opened with a first round 312 and then followed with a five shot improvement with a 305 in the second. Houston Baptist leads with a two-round score of 592.
UTRGV will be back on the course tomorrow for the final round of the tournament starting at 8 a.m.
