Women’s Golf Posts Strong Finish

McALLEN, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s golf team posted a seventh-place team finish at the UTRGV Invitational while sophomore Samantha Garza finished tied for third on Tuesday at McAllen Country Club. 

UTRGV’s first team finished just one shot back of Creighton and Incarnate Word for fifth place as they finished with a three-round total of 933 while UTRGV’s second team finished in 16th with a three-round score of 1103 after a final round 367.

Garza posted a one-under 71 in the final round to finish with a three-round score of 226 as she carded 15 pars, two birdies, and one bogey. Garza finished just two shots back of individual winner Leighton Shosted of Utah Valley.

Sophomore Sophia Tejeda finished tied for 21st with a three-round score of 233 after carding a final round 76. Sophomore Mercedes Vega tied for 29th with a three-round score of 237 after a final round 80. 

Freshman Maria Jose Ramirez finished tied for 38th with a three-round 239 after posting a final round 80 and freshman Madi Ozuna finished tied for 58th with a three-round total of 247 with a final round 78. 

Graduate student Rachel Yu led UTRGV’s second team with three-round score of 252 to finish tied for 65th after posting a final round 78. Freshman Mason Rawls finished in 75th with a three-round score of 271 after a final round 96. Junior Blayke Van Houten finished in 76th with a three-round score of 287 with a final round 98 and freshman Catherine Flores finished in 77th with a three-round score of 293 with a final round 95. 

Houston Baptist and Corpus Christi tied for the team title with Houston Baptist winning the playoff to take home the trophy. The tied for first place finish gives Corpus Christi three points in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.

The Vaqueros will be back in action on March 14 when they tee it up at the HBU Husky Invitational at Riverbend Country Club.
